A large rogue lion hunts down a father and his two teenage daughters to demonstrate that the Savanna only has one dominant predator. Anyone who has seen a movie before understands that the heroes of Beast are most likely going to survive their encounter with a rogue lion that has been aggravated and made hostile by poachers hunting its pride. The film centers on a family fighting for their lives. In spite of this, director Baltasar Kormákur creates a thrilling sense of danger with visceral brutality and unrelenting attacks, often beginning with deft camera angles that heighten fear by showing how quickly the lion charges across the South African Savanna to bite his prey. The key is that a movie succeeds when it can make viewers forget that they are viewing something that was scripted, usually in the characters’ favor, and making them believe in the danger. As long as the execution is charged and exciting enough to the point where the characters and stakes feel real and significant, formulas and clichés are not necessarily bad. Idris Elba plays Dr. Nate Samuels in this scene. He is a bereaved father who visits the community where his mother was from with the intention of reuniting with his two daughters, Meredith and Norah. Cancer claimed her life, and teenage Meredith retains animosity toward her father for being emotionally numb and consumed by his work through this trying time while saving other people’s lives. Nate stated that he believed he had more time. Meredith complains that despite his continued distance, he seldom shows any interest in her passion for photography. The family encounters Martin Sharlto Copley, a longtime friend of Nate’s who cares after the Savanna and is reputed to be an anti-poacher, for the first time in what feels like a very long time. Copley is also handed one of the most thrilling sequences in the film. Meredith’s interest in photography is instantly acknowledged as more than her father has ever done so, and both daughters show an increased interest in Martin right away. Meredith and Norah naturally complain about the lack of Wi-Fi, but a trip to see some tame lions in the wild cheers them up.
